The Polish Desert

Yesterday I went to a real life desert about an hours drive from Krakow. It’s called Błędów Desert (sometime the Polish Sahara! (link in Polish)) and is a very strange phenomenon and quite unique to Central Europe. This being a desert there wasn’t much to take photos of! :-)
If you look closely in the photo below you should just about make out some small Polish Camels!

July was a busy month. I had just come back from 10 days at the Baltic coast of Poland and had a days rest before I was jetting off again to Portugal (new country). First we visited Lisbon and stayed there for one night and then Porto for the JEWC ‘08. After returning to Lisbon and flying back to Krakow via Zurich (new country) and Warsaw, I had another couple of days rest before my brother arrived in Krakow for 2 weeks of fun and festivities!

While he was here I showed him most of Krakow’s major sights and the surrounding areas. We also went on a day trip to Warsaw and had one night in the Tatra mountains in Zakopane. While we were in Zakopane we hopped over the border (via a mountain top) to Slovakia.

Below are the photos from these trips. Let me know what you think!

Firefox 3 surpasses 5 million Downloads!

I made history. Did you? Firefox 3 is trying to get the most downloads in a 24 hour period. Currently it has just past the 5 million mark. It is just over halfway through the download day now. Will it reach 10 million? Only time will tell!! Of course it is likely that some people are downloading it again and again to get the total higher (yes there are people sad enough to do this!) but it will be interesting to see the unique IP download number!

New 3G iPhone

The new 3G iPhone will be released on the 11th of July and they have dramatically cut the price of it this time. The biggest problem I have therefore (except no MMS) is how I will resist buying one when I go back to the UK. I’m hoping that the rip-off call charges of O2 (the unique carrier) will put me off! ;-)

More information about the new iPhone is available from the BBC.

Apple Stories on Digg
This was what I saw when I logged into Digg.com this evening. 7 out of 10 top technology stories were about Apple. Damn Apple fanboys! By the way I want a cheaper 3G iPhone!! ;-)

Gmail Labs
Google has just launched a major new feature in Gmail. Called Google Labs, if gives users a chance to use feature that are not quite ready for primetime yet. (Remember Gmail is still beta anyway.) One of the best features is enabling Snake to be played inside Gmail! :-D
The way I got Gmail Labs enabled was to change my language to UK English. Normally only the new features go to US English so I was quite surprised. Most likely all it needed was a reload.

Taking the 64 bit Plunge

Yesterday I reinstalled a fresh copy of Ubuntu onto my PC due to it being an upgraded version from the Beta. I decided that I would go down the 64 bit route. I’ve heard of many stories about people having trouble what with lack of drivers and programs etc. I was prepared for hassle but after less than 15 minutes I had a fully up and running version of Ubuntu as usual. I had already tested out some potentially problematic things on the Live CD such as installing the drivers for my webcam and to get Skype up and running. Both were flawless, so I pressed on with the installation. Now I am writing from my new 64 bit os with it up to almost exactly the same state it was in before the install. (The same programs and files.) The only thing I can say is: what is the big deal? I’ve had absolutely no problems relating to 64 bit.

Why don’t more people use their hardware to it’s full potential and use 64 bit? Perhaps in the Windows world it isn’t as easy? ;-)

New Width

I have finally got round to removing the smaller size of Hugh’s Space. You may have to remove cookies and refresh the page to see the new width. Let me know if you experience any problems!

Flickr Photos

Kaweh reminded me that I had a Flickr account too. I had filled it up with photos from Mexico and Croatia but seeing as they’re on my website already, I removed them from Flickr and uploaded some more artistic shots. Let me know what you think. Below is a random selection.
